Normal Blood Sugar Numbers: A1C and Fasting Ranges

Quick answer

Normal blood sugar numbers are an A1C below 5.7% and a fasting glucose below 100 mg/dL. Prediabetes is 5.7 to 6.4% and 100 to 125 mg/dL. Diabetes is 6.5% or more and 126 mg/dL or more, confirmed by a repeat test. One reading is not a diagnosis.

The three bands01

What are normal blood sugar numbers?

A normal A1C is below 5.7%. A normal fasting glucose is below 100 mg/dL (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).

Two tests, one scale. A1C averages the last two to three months. Fasting glucose is a single draw after at least eight hours without food.

Type your own result into the finder. It only sorts a number into a band. It does not diagnose.

  2. PrediabetesA1C 5.7-6.4%Fasting 100-125 mg/dL
  3. Diabetes rangeA1C 6.5% or higherFasting 126 mg/dL or higher

Type an A1C or a fasting number to see its range. One test is not a diagnosis; a doctor confirms with a repeat test.

Ranges from NIDDK (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests). About 115.2 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, and many of them do not know it (CDC, National Diabetes Statistics Report). A home meter does not give a diagnosis.

The ranges02

What is the difference between normal, prediabetes and diabetes numbers?

Each band has a cut-off on each test. Cross a cut-off and the label changes.

Prediabetes means higher than normal but below the diabetes cut-off. About 115.2 million U.S. adults are in that range or above it, and the CDC counts 11.0 million adults with diabetes who do not know it (CDC, National Diabetes Statistics Report).

Source: NIDDK (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests). OGTT is the oral glucose tolerance test, a timed drink and blood draw.

Margins03

How far is my reading from the next band?

Subtract your reading from the cut-off. The gap is your margin.

An A1C of 5.4% is 0.3 points under the prediabetes line (5.7 minus 5.4). A fasting reading of 112 mg/dL is 12 above the normal line (112 minus 100) and 14 under the diabetes line (126 minus 112). Two subtractions, two margins.

Write both margins on the same slip. A reading close to a line deserves a repeat test sooner than one far from it. A reading in the middle of a band tells you less about the next lab.

Margins show direction, not fate. Meters vary, labs vary, and one morning varies. That is why NIDDK asks for a second abnormal result before a diagnosis (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).

  • A1C 5.4%: normal, 0.3 below the next line.
  • Fasting 112 mg/dL: prediabetes range, 14 below the diabetes line.
  • A1C 6.5%: right on the diabetes line, repeat the test.

One reading04

Does one high blood sugar reading mean diabetes?

No. Diagnosis takes two abnormal results, from the same or different samples (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).

A big meal, illness, stress or poor sleep can push one reading up. A home meter is also not a diagnostic test. Treat a home number as a prompt to book a lab test.

Keep taking prescribed medicine

If you take diabetes medicine, never change it because of a reading or a supplement. Call your clinician about the number.

Symptoms of high blood sugar include frequent urination, thirst, hunger, fatigue and blurry vision (CDC, Symptoms of Diabetes). Many people with prediabetes have none.

The low side05

What blood sugar number counts as low?

For many people with diabetes, low blood glucose is under 70 mg/dL (NIDDK, Low Blood Glucose).

Signs are shakiness, hunger, tiredness, dizziness, confusion, irritability and a fast heartbeat. Insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides can cause lows.

The usual step is 15 to 20 g of fast carbohydrate, then a recheck in 15 minutes. Call 911 if a person passes out, has a seizure or cannot safely swallow. The full bar is in the medicines guide.

Moving the numbers06

What moves blood sugar numbers toward normal?

The best-tested tools are weight, movement and, for some, prescribed medicine.

In the Diabetes Prevention Program, a lifestyle group aiming at 7% weight loss and 150 minutes of exercise a week cut the risk of type 2 diabetes by 58% over about 3 years. Metformin cut it by 31% (NIDDK, Diabetes Prevention Program).

For a 200-pound adult, 5 to 7% is 10 to 14 pounds (CDC, Prediabetes). That is the math, not a promise.

Weight

5 to 7% of body weight is the CDC target.

Movement

At least 150 minutes a week of brisk activity.

Care

Repeat labs and a plan with your clinician.

Supplements07

Do supplements change blood sugar numbers?

No supplement is proven to lower glucose, says ADA (ADA, Vitamins & Supplements).

Payarmin is a dietary supplement with 0.7 mcg of chromium per 1 mL serving, 0.35% of a 200 mcg dose, and trials used hundreds of mcg (NIH ODS, Chromium). We do not claim the drops move your A1C. See benefits and the evidence.

What should I ask my clinician about my numbers?

Ask which test to repeat, and when.

  • Is my A1C reliable, or could another condition skew it?
  • Should I have a fasting test or an OGTT?
  • What weight and activity targets fit me?
  • Do any of my medicines or supplements affect the result?

FAQ08

Normal blood sugar numbers questions

What is a normal A1C level?

A normal A1C is below 5.7%, per NIDDK. Prediabetes is 5.7 to 6.4%, and diabetes is 6.5% or higher. A1C reflects the average of the past two to three months, so one bad meal does not move it much.

What is a normal fasting blood sugar number?

A normal fasting blood sugar is below 100 mg/dL after at least eight hours without food. Prediabetes is 100 to 125 mg/dL. Diabetes is 126 mg/dL or higher, confirmed with a repeat test.

Is 5.9 a bad A1C?

An A1C of 5.9% sits in the prediabetes range of 5.7 to 6.4%, which is 0.2 above normal and 0.6 below the diabetes line. It is a prompt to talk with a clinician about repeat testing, weight and activity.

Is a fasting blood sugar of 105 normal?

No. 105 mg/dL falls in the prediabetes range of 100 to 125. It is 5 above the normal line and 21 under the diabetes line. Book a lab test and ask your clinician what it means for you.

What blood sugar number is too low?

For many people with diabetes, a blood glucose under 70 mg/dL is low. Take 15 to 20 g of fast carbohydrate and recheck in 15 minutes. Call 911 if the person passes out, has a seizure or cannot swallow.

Can a home meter diagnose diabetes?

No. A home meter does not give a diagnosis. Use it to track a pattern and bring the log to your clinician, who orders lab tests. A diagnosis needs two abnormal lab results.

Do blood sugar numbers differ by age?

The NIDDK adult ranges on this guide are the same cut-offs for most adults. Targets for people already diagnosed can differ by age and health, so ask your clinician for yours.
