Forskolin, cayenne, grapefruit, raspberry ketones and licorice in Payarmin

Quick answer

Five Payarmin blend lines are neither the headline plants nor amino acids: Coleus forskohlii (9th), capsicum (10th), grapefruit extract (11th), raspberry ketones (13th) and monoammonium glycyrrhizinate (18th). The label hides their amounts. Listing order caps them at 22.2, 20, 18.2, 15.4 and 11.1 mg per mL.

Meter readings01

What are the other herbs and compounds in Payarmin?

They are five mid-to-low blend lines: forskolin, cayenne, grapefruit, raspberry ketones and a licorice compound.

The panel names them "Coleus Forskohlii Root Extract", "Capsicum Annuum Fruit Extract", "Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) Fruit Extract", "Raspberry Ketones" and "Monoammonium Glycyrrhizinate". Four are sold for weight or metabolism. The licorice compound is more often a sweetener and flavor.

None of the five is named on the sales page. Each is capped by its place in a list ordered by weight.

The ceiling math02

How much forskolin, capsicum and the rest could one serving hold?

Each line is capped at 200 divided by its place: 22.2 mg for forskolin down to 11.1 mg for the licorice compound.

These are maximums, not readings. The blend totals 200 mg per mL, shared by 22 lines, so the same line could weigh far less. An even split is 9.09 mg.

Ceilings per 1 mL against amounts used in research
LinePlaceMost per mLResearch amount
Coleus forskohlii922.2 mg500 mg a day of 10% forskolin extract
Capsicum1020 mg2-4 mg capsaicin a day
Grapefruit extract1118.2 mgNo studied dose found
Raspberry ketones1315.4 mgOnly tested in combination products
Glycyrrhizinate1811.1 mgNo studied dose found

Worked example for forskolin: the trial dose is 500 mg of extract at 10%, which is 50 mg of forskolin. The 22.2 mg ceiling is extract weight. At 2 droppers (assumed 1 mL each) that is at most 44.4 mg of extract, under a tenth of the trial extract dose.

The label does not print dropper volume. We assume 1 mL.

Line 903

Does forskolin in Payarmin help with weight or blood pressure?

Clinical studies showing forskolin is safe and effective are lacking (MSKCC, Forskolin (Coleus forskohlii)).

The cancer center source lists low blood pressure, slow heart rate and diarrhea as reported effects. Based on laboratory studies, it may add to blood pressure medicine and raise bleeding risk with warfarin and other blood thinners (MSKCC, Forskolin (Coleus forskohlii)).

Small weight trials found no weight effect (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss). We therefore treat the "weight" use as marketing, and the 22.2 mg ceiling makes any pharmacology even less likely. A flag still stands for anyone on blood pressure drugs or blood thinners.

Line 1004

Is the cayenne (capsicum) in Payarmin enough to spice up metabolism?

No source we hold says so: capsaicin effects on weight and appetite are small (MSKCC, Cayenne (Capsicum)).

A possible effect on insulin and blood glucose rests on a single cited study (MSKCC, Cayenne (Capsicum)). Reported side effects are stomach irritation and pain. It may increase cough with ACE-inhibitor blood pressure drugs and may affect other blood pressure medicines (MSKCC, Cayenne (Capsicum)).

A study of weight found no significant change at 2-4 mg of capsaicin a day (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss). Capsicum extract strength is not printed on the label, so the capsaicin share of 20 mg is unknown.

Line 1105

Can the grapefruit extract in Payarmin interact with prescription drugs?

Grapefruit juice can, and the label does not tell us if the extract behaves the same way.

FDA explains that grapefruit juice blocks the CYP3A4 enzyme in the gut, so some statins, blood pressure drugs, transplant drugs, anti-anxiety drugs and heart-rhythm drugs can build up to excessive levels. Not every drug in those classes is affected (FDA, Grapefruit juice and drugs).

That source is about juice. We found no measurement of this extract at 18.2 mg or less. So the rule is practical: ask a pharmacist whether your medicine is on the grapefruit list before starting.

Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed while you ask.

What about raspberry ketones and the licorice compound?

Raspberry ketone research is in animals and cells; the only human studies used multi-ingredient products, so no benefit can be assigned to it alone (OPSS (DoD), Raspberry Ketone).

The same source finds no evidence that raspberry ketone supplements are safe or effective for weight loss. Their doses of 100 to 1,400 mg a day far exceed the 15.4 mg ceiling here (OPSS (DoD), Raspberry Ketone).

The licorice line is the one with a heart-rhythm flag. Glycyrrhizin can cause irregular heartbeat, especially with large or long-term use, and people with high blood pressure, heart or kidney conditions may be at risk even from small amounts (NCCIH, Licorice Root). The ceiling is 11.1 mg per mL. Whether a small amount counts depends on you, so ask a physician if any of those conditions apply.

FAQ09

Forskolin, capsicum, grapefruit and licorice questions

How much forskolin is in Payarmin?

Not printed. Coleus forskohlii is the 9th of 22 blend lines, so the label order caps it at 22.2 mg of extract per 1 mL serving. The forskolin share of that extract is not stated.

Can I take Payarmin with blood pressure medicine?

Ask your doctor or pharmacist first. Forskolin may add to blood pressure drugs (MSKCC, Forskolin (Coleus forskohlii)), capsicum may affect them (MSKCC, Cayenne (Capsicum)) and arginine can lower pressure (MSKCC, Arginine). The ceilings are small, but the combination matters.

Does the grapefruit in Payarmin affect statins?

Grapefruit juice can raise levels of some statins (FDA, Grapefruit juice and drugs). We have no data on this extract, so ask a pharmacist if your statin is on the grapefruit list before you use the drops.

Do raspberry ketones in Payarmin burn fat?

No evidence says so. Human studies used multi-ingredient products, so no benefit can be assigned to raspberry ketone alone (OPSS (DoD), Raspberry Ketone). The label ceiling is 15.4 mg per mL.

Is the licorice compound in Payarmin risky for blood pressure?

It can be for some people. Glycyrrhizin can affect heart rhythm, especially in large or long-term use, and people with high blood pressure or kidney conditions may be at risk (NCCIH, Licorice Root). The label ceiling is 11.1 mg.

What is monoammonium glycyrrhizinate?

It is a salt of glycyrrhizin, the sweet compound from licorice root. It is the 18th of 22 blend lines. We found no studied dose, so we state none.

Does capsicum in Payarmin make the drops spicy?

The label does not describe taste. Capsicum is capped at 20 mg per mL, and the other ingredients list includes natural flavors and stevia extract. Stomach irritation is a reported side effect of cayenne (MSKCC, Cayenne (Capsicum)).
